Trading in France means Paying in France!
This info is not meant to frighten or confuse. If you are seeking work to be carried out at your property, by any tradesman, you need to be aware. If you seek unqualified, unregistered workers in France because they are cheap. Guess what, thats what you are going to get, a cheap job plus you have no chance of getting your money back as you are also deemed by the french to be just as guilty and can be fined or even imprisoned before they throw both you and the worker on the black, out of France. Straight to the boat sometimes. It depends on how much money they they can squeeze out of you both. Think they will not go after your house. Think again. When men knock on your door in the UK saying "I can lay your drive with tarmac cheap moosh", would you blindly let them?
Siret numbers:
In France it is up to the customer (thats you) to ensure that any tradesmen/artisans used are properly registered and insured. This involves checking their Siret number which consists of 14 numbers – the first 9 being the Siren number.
We repeat that It is the householder’s responsibility to ensure that trades people they are using are properly registered and insured - there are large penalties on both sides for using unregistered trades people.
All legitimate trades and businesses must be registered with either the Chambre de Métiers, Chambres de Commerce, Services Fiscaux, Tribunaux de Commerce, or their regional INSEE.
Always ask any artisan/tradesmen if you can look at their "Carte d'identification". This will have been issued to them by their Chambre de Metiers. Check that they are correctly registered for the trade they are offering (ape code) and always ask to see their relevant insurance documents - in the case of an electrician, builder etc this will include their Ten Year ‘Decenal’ Guarantee.

Just because there is a Siret, it doesn't mean that a toilet cleaner can legally build a brick wall. APE codes can be checked here
